Bill was born May 25, 1935, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Orville William and Margaret Townsend Collett. He was raised in Ottumwa and attended public school there. He was a veteran of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. While serving in the military he was able to finish his high school education and also further his education in electrical trade. He was employed for 20 years as a lineman for Iowa Southern Utilities and later in the maintenance department at Grinnell General Hospital. He retired in 1997. On January 27, 1975, he was united in marriage to Linda Adkins, in South Dakota and the couple continued to make their home in Grinnell. Bill was a member of the NRA. He was an avid gun collector and enjoyed collecting coins as well. He held a passion for history and, due to his many hours of research, was very knowledgeable on a wide variety of subjects. He loved animals, especially his dogs, and was known fondly for his open door policy for allowing other pets in his neighborhood to enter his home. He loved his family so very much and was a great provider for them. He had many friends, and his neighbors, Tim and Annette Carnes and Dan and Julie Owens, had become very close friends. Survivors include his wife, Linda of Grinnell; two sons, Chadd (Mickey) Collett of Ottumwa and Heath (Bridget Koester) Collett of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Tandy King of Phoenix, Arizona, Jeff McMillian of Ottumwa, and Jessi Haines of Fairfield; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Pam in 2008; one brother, Darrell; and two sisters, Charlotte Collier and Shirley Qualkinbush.
