Obituary

Betty L. Zoll, 81, of Grinnell died February 11, 2008, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. A funeral mass will be scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 15, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell with the Rev. William Reynolds presiding. Organist will be Marilyn Kriegel. Pallbearers will be Dennis, Randy, and Robert Boyd, Tim Heishman, and Jeff, Rod, and Tom Thompson. Burial will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday evening. A vigil service will be held 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice. The daughter of Ralph and Gladys Newman Walter, Betty was born December 31, 1926, in Mendota, Missouri. She moved with her family to Freemont, Iowa and later Malcom. She was a 1944 graduate of Montezuma High School. After high school she moved to Cedar Rapids where she was employed at Collins Radio while attending the University of Iowa. She began teaching school in Hartwick after receiving her teaching certificate. She later received a BA degree in Education at Drake University. On August 17, 1957, she was married to Donald Zoll, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Brooklyn. The couple lived in Grinnell and she continued teaching school in Hartwick and later in Sully, Grinnell, and Brooklyn. For 20 years she taught pre-school in her home, known as 'Mrs. Zoll's Pre-School' and retired in the early 1990's. Betty was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and for several years taught Catechism. She was a volunteer for Grinnell Regional Hospice and Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed her neighborhood coffee club, spending time with her children, and studying religion. She also enjoyed attending the Iowa State Fair, country and blue grass music, and traveling. Survivors include her husband, Donald of Grinnell; her children, Joseph Zoll of Des Moines, Therese Hagg of Ankeny, John Zoll of Grinnell, and Mary Ensign of Austin, Texas; two sisters, Rosemary Thompson of Brooklyn and JoAnn Boyd of New Sharon; and four granddaughters, Rachel and Jenny Hagg and Lily and Emma Ensign. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Christopher Zoll; and two sisters, Marlene Heishman and Darlene Hoover.
