Betty Jane Thompson, 89, of Grinnell died September 6, 2017, at the Mayflower Community Health Care Center.
A memorial service has been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 11th, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. Len Eberhart, Mayflower Community Chaplain, officiating. A private family burial will follow at the Colo Cemetery, Colo, Iowa.
Visitation with the family present will be held one hour prior to the memorial service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grinnell Fire Department or the Mayflower Human Needs Fund.
Betty was born June 25, 1928, in Rockford, Iowa, the daughter of Glenn William and Vera Ellen Gruver Webb. She was raised in Rockford and was a 1945 graduate of Rockford High School. She continued her education while teaching in a country school near Iowa Falls for a year. She then taught in public schools in McCallsburg and Albion.
On August 1, 1948, she was united in marriage with Henry Thompson, in Marshalltown. The couple farmed together near Ferguson and Gilman and she later was employed at several businesses in the Grinnell area, all while raising eight children. In 1987, she began working at the Mayflower Community in Grinnell in food service and retired from there in 2001. She moved to Beebe Hall of the Mayflower in 2013.
She was a member of Eastern Star Onyx Chapter 350 since 1957.
Betty was extremely supportive of her family and loved sharing her time with them. She enjoyed cooking and baking, crocheting and making candy mints for special occasions. She loved flowers and was an avid reader.
Survivors include her eight children, Sherry Thompson of Grinnell, Karen Thompson of Grinnell, Ken (Karen) Thompson of Grinnell, Gary (Carla) Thompson of Cape Coral, Florida, Janet (Alvin) Peiffer of Washington, Peggy (Gary) Morse of Montezuma, Henry Thompson, Jr. of Grinnell and Glenn (Melanie) Thompson of Gilman; one brother, Donald (Mona) Webb of Delta, Colorado; 16 grandchildren, Kelli (Jason) Grams of Clive, Kane (Morgan) Thompson of Cedar Rapids, Nic (Krista) Thompson of Minneapolis, Candra (Dustin) Bass of Monett, Missouri, Travis Thompson of Monett, Missouri, Aaron Floden of Montezuma, Brandon Floden of Washingtion, Casey Peiffer of Washington, Savanna (Jesse) Mason of New Sharon, Tina (Myron) Widmer of Deep River, Sara (Ken) Alexander of Brooklyn, Tami (Jeff) Foubert of Gibson, Rodney Morse of Montezuma and Rose Mary, Ryan and Lauren Thompson of Gilman; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2000; and her brother and his wife, James and Patricia Webb.
