Betty Ratcliff, 84, of Grinnell died on Wednesday, December 20, 2006, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral services for Mrs. Ratcliff will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 27, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. Susan Leathem, Grinnell Regional Hospice chaplain, officiating. Pallbearers will be Denny Conway, Pete Guillaume, John Ratcliff, Kenneth Saunders, Cody and Wade Stoaks. Honorary bearers are Amanda Christensen, Austin, Gage, Mandi, Meagan and Steve Ratcliff, and Lilly and Skylor Stoaks. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Betty Ratcliff Memorial Fund. The daughter of Willis C. and Jessie Mae Wisecarver Dunham, she was born October 1, 1922, in Grinnell. She was raised in Grinnell and was a 1941 graduate of Grinnell High School. While in high school she was employed at the Candyland Confectionary Store. After high school, she clerked part-time at both J.C Penney's and Broadway and then was employed at the Grinnell Glove Factory. She later worked at A & P Grocery Store and then for Poweshiek County Mutual Insurance Company. She married Gene V. Ratcliff on September 25, 1947, at the Grinnell United Methodist Church. The couple continued to make their home in Grinnell. In 1961, she began working at Grinnell Federal Savings & Loan, where she was employed for 27 years as a teller, secretary and receptionist. She also sold Avon Products for 25 years. She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and Daughter of the Union Veterans. Survivors include three children, Michael Ratcliff of Newton, Kathy Stoaks of Grinnell and Tyaria Ratcliff of Grinnell; one sister, Shirley Palmer of Anaheim, California; five grandchildren, Steve Ratcliff of Ames, Johnathan Ratcliff of Marshalltown, Amanda Christensen of Des Moines and Cody and Wade Stoaks of Grinnell; six great-grandchildren, Skylor and Lilly Stoaks and Meagan, Austin, Mandi and Gage Ratcliff; and her former husband, Gene Ratcliff of Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Gladys Ann Taylor and Kay Burnham; one brother, Bill Smith; and one granddaughter, Amy Michelle Stoaks.
