Obituary

Betty Kelm, 93, of Grinnell died on Monday, June 28, 2021, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 24, 2021, at Trinity Lutheran Church northeast of Grinnell. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. A reception will follow the service at the church. Interment will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials may be designated to Trinity Lutheran Church, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with Betty's family online at www.smithfh.com. Betty Lou Haines was born on February 16, 1928, in Brooklyn, Iowa to Andrew and Pearl (Otto) Haines. She was raised and educated in Grinnell. Betty was united in marriage to Eldon L. Kelm on September 13, 1952 in Malcom, Iowa. The couple was blessed with a son, Brian. They resided on a farm near Malcom and Betty was a longtime employee of GTE (General Telephone) in Grinnell. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Grinnell Regional Medical Center Ladies Auxiliary, and the Afternoon Circle. Betty dearly loved her family and always looked forward to family gatherings. Her enjoyments were cooking, collecting cook books, reading, bird watching, and enjoying the beauty and tranquility of nature. She will be remembered for her welcoming smile, for being a prayer warrior and faithful servant of the Lord, for being selfless, for being a true friend, and for the strong love of her family. Betty is survived by her son, Brian Kelm of Arcadia, Florida; a grandson, Andrew Kelm of Arcadia, Florida; great grandchildren, Ethan Leo Kelm and Liam Quinn Kelm of Pell City, Alabama; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eldon Kelm; grandson, Paul Kelm; granddaughter, Jennifer Brisino; brothers, Wallace, Ralph, John, Bill and Raymond Haines; and sisters, Zella Delk, Hazel Haines, Fern Freeborn, and Catherine Akers; and several nieces and nephews.
