Betty Bayer, 81, of Guernsey, died on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at Brooklyn Community Estates.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am, Monday, June 3, 2024, at St. John's Lutheran Church south of Victor. Interment will be at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at in the fellowship hall of St. John's Lutheran Church.
The family will receive friends at the visitation held from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm on Sunday, June 2nd at St. John's Lutheran Church south of Victor.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to St. John's Lutheran Church or to Lutheran Interparish School in Williamsburg, and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home and Crematory, PO Box 485, Victor, IA 52347. Betty Jean Hershey was born on April 8, 1943 in Atkins, Iowa to Charles and Anna (Lockhart) Hershey. She was raised in Alburnett, Iowa and graduated from Alburnett High School in 1962.
Betty was united in marriage to Martin Bayer on March 8, 1964 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Their marriage was blessed with four children: Jeffrey, Joel, David, and Deborah. They farmed near Guernsey and Betty was a homemaker. They were longtime members of St. John's Lutheran Church south of Victor and Betty was very active in Ladies Aid.
Betty enjoyed quilting and gardening. She also helped out on the family farm, driving tractor and sending out meals during planting and harvest season. Her greatest love was watching and spending time with her grandchildren.
Betty is survived by her husband, Martin Bayer of Guernsey; Jeffrey Bayer of Guernsey, Joel (Angie) Bayer of Victor, David (Kelly) Bayer of Guernsey, Debbie (Tony) Upah of Chelsea; 7 grandchildren, William, Owen, Emily, Ryan, and Beth Bayer, and Lauren and Ava Upah; sister-in-law, Anetta Hershey; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Howard, Harry, and George Hershey; sister-in-law, Velma Hershey; and a grandson, Nolan Bayer.
