Bertha was born the daughter of Roy and Una (Turney) Tarvin in Barnes City, Iowa on December 24, 1916. She graduated from Montezuma High School with the class of 1935.
On November 25, 1937, she was united in marriage to George Schlegle Vanderburgh in Dutchess County, New York. The couple both had a career with IBM in Poughkeepsie, New York. Her husband George passed away on November 27, 1971.
After her retirement in 1977, she was very active in bird watching groups, cross country skiing and mountain climbing. She was a member of the Catskill Mountain 3500 Club. She also did extensive traveling within the United States as well as foreign countries.
In 1986, she moved back to Iowa to the Mayflower Home Health Care Center in Grinnell, where she remained very active until she suffered a broken hip.
Bertha is survived by her sister Marjorie Little and her husband Floyd of Montezuma; her two sisters-in-law Margaret Tarvin of Grinnell and Ruth Tarvin of Englewood, Florida; and her several nieces, nephews and friends.
Bertha was preceded in death by her parents; her husband George; her five brothers: Everett, Cleo, Floyd, Clark and Raymond; and her two sisters, Lois Tarvin and Lodi Slagle.
