Bernice was born on December 2, 1917, on the family farm near Rock Creek Lake, west of Grinnell to Herman and Gladys Shill Deppe. She was raised on the family farm, attended rural school and graduated with the Class of 1935 from Grinnell High School. Following her education she worked for the Grinnell Shoe Company. On May 6, 1949, she was married to John Winchell at Tipton, Iowa. The couple lived in Grinnell and she worked in the office of the Rudy-Patrick Seed Company. In the 1970, the couple moved to St. Joseph, Missouri and she worked for the Research Seed Company. Following her retirement in 1980 they returned to Grinnell. Bernice was a member of the Grinnell Eagles Club. She enjoyed photography, fishing, bowling, painting, gardening, cooking, playing cards and watching pro and college sporting events. She is survived by two brothers, Gerald Deppe and Ernest 'Bud' Deppe, both of Grinnell and her sister, Maxine Wilson of Grinnell; and many nieces and nephews; grand nieces and nephews; and great grand nieces and nephews. She was preceeded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother, Albert Deppe; and one sister, Della Springer.
