Lis was born June 15, 1926, in Lake Park, Iowa, the daughter of David Irvin and Marguerite Noll Horton. She was raised in Lake Park and later moved with her family to Los Angeles where she was a 1944 graduate of John C. Fremont High School.
On October 27, 1944, she was united in marriage to Francis Eugene 'Gene' Slaven, in Baltimore, Maryland, where he served with the United States Coast Guard. Following the war, the couple moved to Grinnell.
For many years Lis was active raising her children and she was later employed with Grinnell General Hospital for 25 years retiring in 1988. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Flutter Wheelers 060 square dancing club. The love Lis held for her family was always evident and she valued her time shared with her grandchildren. She was always 'on the go' whether attending flea markets and quilt shop hops or going to square dance events and the camping associated with the Flutter Wheelers. She was adventurous in life and was never afraid to attempt new things, like whitewater rafting! She enjoyed sewing, cooking and baking, particularly cookies, candy and chocolates and held a passion for gardening and canning her produce.
Survivors include five children, David (Barb) Slaven of Montezuma, Cynthia (Jim) Reimer, Lisa (Gary) McCulley, Debra Van DeKrol, and Julie (Bill) Doud, all of Grinnell; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2010; one brother, Paul Horton; and one sister, Doris Brott.
