Barbara Ann Franz, 82, of Grinnell, Iowa died Monday, January 23, 2017, at the Mayflower Community Health Care Center in Grinnell, after a courageous battle with cancer. A celebration of life service will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday, January 28th, at the Carman Center of the Mayflower Community with the Rev. Dr. Mitchell E. Otto, pastor of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Coralville, officiating. Burial will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 4th, at the Wildwood Cemetery in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice. Barbara was born December 13, 1934, in Hutchinson, Minnesota, the first child of August and Doris (Olesen) Otto. She was raised in Hutchinson and was a graduate of Hutchinson High School and soon after attended a business school in Minneapolis. She met the love of her life, Leroy E. Franz, at a bible camp in June of 1953. He soon became the Rev. Franz, pastor to several congregations of the United Church of Christ over the years. They were united in marriage on April 25, 1954, in Hutchinson. They were the parents of two boys. Barbara moved to the Mayflower Community in Grinnell on August 23, 1997, partly because Leroy had been on the Mayflower Board. She held many interests including, counted cross stitching, collecting cartoons that reflect on Noah's Ark and reading. She was an active member of the Grinnell U.C.C. and regularly participated in the Seeker's Class. She was also active in many Mayflower campus opportunities and participated in many activities while there. Survivors include two sons, Brian (Lori) Franz of Cedar Rapids and Joel Franz of Ames; three brothers, Gary (Marie) Otto, Eugene (Pat) Otto and Robert (Janie) Otto all of Hutchinson, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Leroy.
