Obituary

Arthur M. Heimann, 98, of Grinnell died on April 14, 2020, at the Mayflower Community Health Care Center in Grinnell. A private family graveside service and burial with military rites will be held at Rock Creek Cemetery in Jasper County with Rev. Kirsten Klepfer, First Presbyterian Church, officiating. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be designated to the Mayflower Community Human Needs Fund or Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. Art was born on March 23, 1922, in Bakersfield, California, the son of W. Arthur and Gladys E. Morken Heimann. He was raised in Burlingame, California and was a 1940 graduate of Burlingame High School. He furthered his education at San Mateo J.C. and later Oregon State University. During his junior year while at Oregon State, he enlisted in the United States Army and was called to duty thereafter. He served with the U.S. Corps of Engineers in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during W.W. II and was stationed in the Philippines for several years. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in March of 1946. Art remembers, ironically, doing some military training on the campus of Grinnell College, "his first taste of Iowa!" On July 12, 1946, he was united in marriage to Julia A. Kvasny, in Burlingame. The couple rented a farm near Pescadero, California for several years prior to moving to Colfax in 1949, while there he was employed with Allsup Hardware Store. The couple moved to Rock Creek Lake in 1955 and to the Mayflower Community in 1989. Most of his working career was with the Maytag Company in Newton where he served in a number of positions and as Chief Manufacturing Engineer for the last 10 years of his employment. He retired from Maytag in 1985 after 34 years there. After his wife, Julia, passed away in June of 1999, he was united in marriage to Grace L. Leinen, on June 23, 2003, in Cedar Falls and the couple continued living in the Mayflower Community. Grace passed away in March of 2006. Art was an active and well respected volunteer all his life. His voluntarism includes, Cub and Boy Scouts of America leader (awarded the Silver Beaver), a member of the Kiwanis Club and Masonic Lodge, served on the City Council and School Board, while living in Colfax, and the Board of Adjustment, City of Grinnell. He was a member of the Grinnell United Church of Christ-Congregational and a long-time member of the Grinnell First Presbyterian Church. Community service was also important to Art, and this included, the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, Older Iowans Legislature, Caring Adults, Planning member-Grinnell Extreme makeover, Poweshiek County Council on Aging, a lifetime member of the Maytag Management Club, a member of the American Society for Quality Control, certified Quality and Reliability Engineer and registered professional engineer-Quality Engineering. He served on the Grinnell Senior Chamber of Commerce, was a former president of the Mayflower Residents Association, and was active in school bond issues and as a volunteer at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Art held a keen interest in horticulture and was known for his woodworking skills. His love for travel took him and Julia abroad to Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and Japan. Art is survived by his children, Ray (Kim) Heimann of Newton, Marijo "Jo" Heimann-Schreck of Manchester, Mark (Teri) Heimann of Dike, and Ed Heimann of Greely; three step-children, Gary (Sarah) Leinen of Bozeman, Montana, Kim (Ray) Heimann of Newton, and Scott Leinen of Pella; a son-in-law, Gary Sayres of Centerville; his grandchildren, Chris Heimann, Sara Van Maarren, Erin Lawson, Bradley Van Blaricon,, Hilary Sayres, Emily Kozak, Will Schreck, Anna Schreck, Jeff Heimann, Annie Streng and Josh Heimann; and his great-grandchildren, Taylor Lynn and Kolby Jo Lawson, Kayley Anne and Ava Rae Van Maarren, Grady and Kingsley Heimann, Atticus, Ulysses, and Achilles Streng, and Augustus Kozak.. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Julia and second wife, Grace; his daughter, Nancy Sayres; and his sister, Sharlee "Shar" Wilson.
