Arthur "Rusty" Ervin, 76, of Tama, passed away July 12, 2022, at Unity Point Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, July 16, 2022, at 10:00 am at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, IA.
A visitation will be held at 9:00 am, one hour prior to the service.
Rusty was born January 30, 1946, in Centerville, IA to John and Edna (Foran) Ervin. He went to school and was raised in the Grinnell area.
On September 12, 1964, he married Luvica Haines at the Assembly of God Church in Grinnell. To this union, the couple had a daughter Wanda and foster son Fred Dost. Both he and Luvica were involved in foster parenting for over 20 years.
Rusty worked for Rock Island Railroad for 20 years, and then he worked as a Millwright until he retired in 2011.
Rusty and Luvica were known for their annual Green Tomato Fry, where family, friends and neighbors would gather. Rusty made sure everything he would have liked as a kid were part of the event including go carts, a zipline and many other games and activities. He was an avid reader, enjoyed fishing, camping and traveling with his family. Rusty owned and liked to take care of his 1967 Pontiac Firebird that he bought new. He also took pride in building the giant treehouse for and with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Luvica; his daughter Wanda (Jerry) Simmons of Grinnell; foster son, Fred Dost of Sigourney; grandchildren, Jake Schorlemmer of New York, Josh Schorlemmer of the Virgin Islands, Madeline Schorlemmer of North Dakota, and Mik Schorlemmer of Utah; three sisters, Jeraldine Bond, Mary Ervin and Gloria Armstrong; brother-in-law, Earl Davis; and sister-in-law, Darlene Ervin.
He is predeceased by his parents; brothers, Earl Laverne Ervin and Richard "Red" Ervin; sisters, Eleanor "Sissy" Davis and Nyta Lemke; and two brother-in-laws.
