Obituary

Anthony Glen "Tony" Cookson, 64, of Grinnell died on February 15, 2021, at his home of natural causes. Due to Covid-19, a graveside service and burial will be held at a later date at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be designated to the family of Tony Cookson. Tony was born on September 3, 1956, in Quincy, Illinois, the son of Glen Hurley and Helen Elizabeth Nelson Cookson. He spent part of his childhood in Quincy and attended a catholic school there. In 1963, he moved with his family to Grinnell and was a 1974 graduate of Grinnell High School. He furthered his education at Marshalltown Community College and received three Associate Degrees in Electronic Tech, HVOC Tech, and Computer Science. Tony was a veteran of the United States Army, Specialist 4, during the post Viet Nam era. While living in Grinnell, Tony was employed at Robin Tech, Farmhand, Videoland, Kum & Go, and for 12 ½ years at Walmart in Newton. Tony held a huge passion for playing video games, especially fantasy games, including Dungeons and Dragons. He was an avid reader of science fiction novels. Survivors include his brother, John of Grinnell; his former sister-in-law, Diane Story Cookson of Cedar Rapids; and two nephews, Nicholas (Erin) Cookson and Brandon (Sara) Cookson, all of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew, Adam Cookson (January 24, 2021).
