Obituary

Anthony M. Berardo, age 75, of Grinnell, Iowa and formerly of Dania Beach, Florida, died on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at his residence. Memorials may be made to the Anthony M. Berardo Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Anthony was born on April 8, 1936, in Jersey City, New Jersey, the son of Emilio and Adelina Berardo. Anthony lived in New Jersey and then later in Dania Beach, Florida, where he loved to go to the beach, go to horse racing venues, or walk down the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk to listen to live music on a warm, breezy night. He was well-known up and down the east coast of the United States as one of the best horseracing handicappers around. Anthony had a tough guy, east coast way of talking, but actually had a tender heart and liked to give to others. Two years ago after some unfortunate misfortunes and his health beginning to fail, he made a temporary move to Grinnell, Iowa, to be near family and get the medical care he needed. He was still in the process of this when he passed away unexpectedly at his residence on March 14, 2012. Anthony is survived by his daughter, Robyn Berardo (Blaine Wells), Grinnell, Iowa; his grandchildren, Mathew (Jamie) McClenathan of Brooklyn, Iowa, Katelyn (Benjamin) McClelland, of Katy, Texas, and Jenna Jo Bales of Grinnell, Iowa. Anthony is also survived by his first great-grandchild, Guinevere "Gwen" Michele McClenathan, who was born on February 19, 2012. He was looking forward to attending the baptism of Gwen on his birthday, April 8th, Easter Sunday. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and brother. Anthony passed away unexpectedly and without financial resources to cover all the costs of transport to and burial of his remains in New Jersey, where his great wish was to be laid to rest beside his beloved family. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations be made to the Anthony M. Berardo Memorial Fund. A date for the memorial service has not yet been established.
