Obituary

Anna May Evans, 104, of Grinnell, died on Friday, April 22, 2005, at the Mayflower Home Health Care Center in Grinnell. A funeral service for Anna Mae will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, at the First Baptist Church in Grinnell with Rev. Tim Stewart officiating. Casket bearers are her grandchildren, Dave Clawson, Matthew Clawson, Mike Evans, Tim Fried, Dave Johnston, John Johnston, Jeff Lloyd, and Scott Lloyd. Honorary bearers are her granddaughters, Nancy Clawson, Karla Evans, Susan Fried, Linda Johnston, Nancy Johnston, and Beverly Lloyd. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell beginning 12 noon on Monday and the family will be present at the funeral home from 6 pm to 8 pm on Monday. Memorials may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice, the First Baptist Church or to the Mayflower Home Human Needs Fund. Anna May was born the daughter of Berlin Quivey and Emma Tuttle on October 21, 1900, on the family farm in the Westfield Community southwest of Grinnell. She attended rural school and was a War Class graduate with the Grinnell High School class of 1918. She then attended and graduated from Grinnell College in 1922. Anna May resided in and taught high school history at Liberty Center, West Liberty, and Oelwein. She was united in marriage to Willis E. Evans at her parents home on June 28, 1930. To this union were born their children, Carl and Mary. The couple resided in the Westfield Community, where they would farm for the entirety of their marriage. After the loss of her husband Willis on June 15, 1953, she moved to Grinnell to assist her mother with her daily activities. Anna May was a member of Baptist Church Guild and Circle, Westfield Ladies Aid, the Searchlight Club, and the Rest and Recreation Club. Her faith and devotion to the First Baptist Church were very strong. Her enjoyments were working with her hands, making crochets and quilts. Anna May traveled on bus trips to various destinations in the United States. She always looked forward to the weekend trips she would take with the Otto's. Anna May will be remembered for her kind disposition and consideration offered to many. She is survived by her children, Carl and his wife Reatha of Rock Creek, Iowa, and Mary Johnston Halfpap and her husband Alvin of Boone, Iowa; six grandchildren; two step grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; and a step great grandchild. Anna May was preceded in death by her husband; her infant brother; and her son-in-law, Don E. Johnston in 1993.
