Obituary

Albert L. Neighbors, 88, of Grinnell, died on Monday, December 12, 2005, at Friendship Manor in Grinnell. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 16, 2005, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Casket Bearers will be Don, Gordon, Steve and Gabe Neighbors, Christopher Pinkerton and Matt Meldrem. Interment will be at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery near Grinnell. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning 12 noon on Thursday and the family will be present at the funeral home from 6 pm to 7 pm on Thursday. Memorials may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice. He was born on July 26, 1917, in Culbertson, Montana, to Fred and Lola Fern Smith Neighbors. The family moved to Missouri and later to Grinnell, Iowa, where he graduated from Grinnell High School with the Class of 1933. Following his education he worked at Sumner Seed Company and for Edwards Market. On January 29, 1938, he was married to Elsie McCaslen in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The couple lived in Grinnell and he worked in the Supply Administration Department of G.T.E. He retired in 1981. Albert enjoyed restoring and exhibiting antique gasoline engines, socializing with friends at local restaurants, collecting miniature race cars and tractors and building sets for his electric trains. Survivors include his two sons and their spouses, Don and Linda Neighbors of Toms Brook, VA and Gordon and Rosemary Neighbors of Grinnell; seven grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren, one sister, Alice Landers of Van Meter, IA, and his dear friend, Helen Paul. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and daughter-in-law.
