Joyce Stone, 89, of Grinnell died December 30, 2016, at Windsor Manor in Grinnell. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 6, 2017, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. John Epperson of Grinnell officiating. Pallbearers will be Richard Stone, Daniel Haynes, Doug See, Paul Rasmussen, John Horsley, Jeremy Smith and SFC. Tim McGlynn. Honorary bearers will be Reyne See, Becky Rasmussen, Melissa Leonard, Stephanie McGlynn, Laura Light, Stacy Haynes, Kerry Horsley, Dr. Ashley Smith and Nicole Stone. A luncheon will follow the service from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the Grinnell Christian Church Family Life Center. A graveside service and burial will follow at 1:30 p.m., Friday at the Pleasant Township Cemetery in Ewart, south of Grinnell. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Grinnell Christian Church Family Life Center, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Joyce Stone Memorial Fund. Joyce was born April 8, 1927, in Taintor, Iowa, the daughter of John and Anna Mae DeWinter Roorda. She was raised in the Pella area and attended high school in Pella, graduating in 1944. Following graduation, she took nurse's aide classes at Mercy Hospital in Grinnell. She met and married Gerrit Ryken in July of 1946. He died two years later and she went to Oregon with her aunt and worked as an aide in a doctor's office. She returned to Iowa where she met Paul Richard Stone and they were united in marriage on January 6, 1951, in Grinnell at the Presbyterian Church by Rev. W.J. Stewart. The couple farmed south of Malcom until 1970 and moved to Grinnell where she was employed in retail sales at Graham's Department Store, Carousal Fabrics and later Cunningham Drug Store. She held a strong faith and through the years she was a member of the Ewart Presbyterian Church, Grinnell First Presbyterian Church (former deacon) and the Grinnell First Baptist Church. Joyce's pride and joy was her family and her time shared with them was always special. She loved them dearly and was always caring. She knew the importance of a strong work ethic and leading by example. She enjoyed camping in the area, playing cards, working crossword puzzles and gardening. She loved flowers, especially orchids! She was a good cook and seamstress and enjoyed keeping herself busy baking pies and making and mending clothes. She was an active member of the Lady Elks and a member and past matron of the Order of Eastern Star. She is survived by her children, Lowell (Diana) Stone of Grinnell, Marcia (David) King of Eldridge, Mary (Charles) Stepanek of Grinnell, Marla Horsley of Omaha, Nebraska and Paula (Jim) Smith of Montezuma; four sisters, Marge Clayton and Sharon (Frank) Fowler of Grinnell, Patricia Davis of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Linda Mason of Pueblo, Colorado; five brothers, Elmer (Delaine) Roorda and Norman (Dena Mae) Roorda of Oskaloosa, Lyle (Judy) Roorda and Bruce (Judi) Roorda of Montezuma and Virgil (Rosie) Roorda of Barnes City; one sister-in-law, Arlene Roorda of Montezuma; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul in 2009; a great-grandson, Andrew Stone; two sisters, Marilyn Fleming-Cook and Barb Foster and three brothers, Harlan, Marvin and Loren Roorda.
