Obituary for Neva Van Gorp

Neva Van Gorp, age 89 of Grinnell, died on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 with her family by her side at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell and under the care of Care Initiatives Hospice.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 19, 2019 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Jim Dotson officiating. Pallbearers are Harold Fortner, Kenny Hiner, Kurt Hoen, Gabe Hoen, Cory Townsend and Chad Winters. Interment will be at Lower Blue Point Cemetery south of Grinnell. A reception will follow at the St. Francis Manor Social Center.

Visitation will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be designated to the St. Francis Manor Foundation or to Care Initiatives Hospice, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.

Neva Dell Asberry was born on March 21, 1930 in Monticello, Kentucky to Lewis and Dora (Bridgeman) Asberry. She was raised in Monticello and when she was 8 years old the family moved to Grinnell, Iowa, where she attended school.

Neva was united in marriage to Robert Van Gorp in the 1950’s and the couple lived in Grinnell. Their marriage was annulled shortly thereafter. Neva worked at several area businesses including, Holland Plastics in Gilman, FarmHand in Grinnell, the Grinnell American Legion, and retired from Grinnell Regional Medical Center on March 1, 1995, after over 20 years as a housekeeper.

Neva enjoyed playing bingo, solving crossword puzzles, going to rodeos, watching the Chicago Cubs on TV and visiting with family and friends. She dearly loved her family, and especially enjoyed spending time with her twin sister, Eva Fortner and niece, Sandy Sheets. Neva will be remembered for being very caring and giving, for being a hard-worker, and for the love of her family.

Survived by her son, Randy (Rosalind) Van Gorp of Grinnell; 2 grandchildren, Jennifer (Kurt) Hoen of Newton, Iowa and Nicholas (Ashley) Van Gorp of Caledonia, Minnesota; 7 great grandchildren, Gabe Hoen, Raven Hoen, Peyton Hoen, Olivia Hoen, all of Newton, Cayden Van Gorp, Derek Trautsch, Tate Van Gorp of Caledonia, Minnesota; and her twin sister, Eva Fortner of Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Lillian Criswell, Lucille Hiner, Carson Asberry and William Asberry.
