Obituary for Mimsy R Tarman

Mimsy Bush Tarman, 74, of Grinnell, died peacefully, November 19, 2018, at her home with her long-time caretaker and friend Kelly Burns at her side. She was under Hospice care.

A celebration of her life service will be from 2:00 to 4:00 Friday, December 7 at the St. Francis Manor social center. There will be a short prayer service at 2:15.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Poweshiek Animal League (PALS) or to Hospice in Grinnell.

Mimsy was born on September 18, 1944, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Robert H. Bush and Ruth Miriam Seidensticker. She was raised in Des Moines and was a 1962 graduate of Des Moines Roosevelt High School. She later received a BA degree and then an MA degree at California State University, Chico.

On January 18, 1964 she married Thomas Allan Tarman, in Tucson, Arizona where they attended University of Arizona. The couple lived in Oakland and Chico. Mimsy was employed as a licensed psychologist, social worker and counselor. She especially loved her jobs teaching Psychology at Butte College in California and counseling aging and Alzheimer’s clients in Austin, Texas, where she lived for 10 years before a brain aneurism. She returned to Iowa in 1999.

Mimsy was considered a gourmet cook and enjoyed learning about various cuisines and giving dinner parties; her cheese cake was prize winning! She had a dry and mischievious sense of humor and loved good-natured pranks and surprises. She went out of her way to befriend and help others and usually had a pot of soup or baked goods for ill neighbors. Mimsy held a passion for music, especially enjoyed listening to Elvis Presley and playing the piano. She loved animals, was an avid reader, and enjoyed traveling.

She is survived by her children, Anastasia (Sean Lynch) Tarman of Juneau, Alaska and Kristin Sigalas of Charleston, South Carolina; four grandchildren, Ronan and Nora Lynch and Noah and Ben Sigalas; her sister, Suzy (Jim) Bim of Brooklyn; two nieces, Emily Eisentrager and Amy McAllister; three great-nieces and three geat-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother David R. Bush.
