Maynard L. Long, 85, of Grinnell, died Thursday, October 9, 2014 at Mayflower Community Health Care Center in Grinnell. There will be no services at this time. Memorials may be directed to the Mayflower Human Needs Fund and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Maynard was born in Grinnell May 6, 1929 to Harold and Mildred (Manor) Long. He graduated from Grinnell High School in 1946 and was Class President. He married Marilyn Lincoln on May 30, 1947 at Grinnell Presbyterian Church. They had two children Diana Long who lives in Pearson 2 with her father (now in the Health Center) and Craig Long who lives in Venice, CA. Maynard worked at the Strand Theater and the Iowa Theater as assistant manager until he went to work for J.C. Penney in a managerial position. He remained at Penney's until he moved to Carey, IL.., where he opened Long's Emporium. When he retired he sold the business and moved to Florida where he ran a mailing service. He and his wife Marilyn were divorced but remained good friends he took care of her until her death. Maynard remained in Florida until he moved to Mayflower in January 2007 to be closer to his family. Maynard had a full and busy life and loved to play golf. He had many friends who were pilots for commercial airlines and he would travel with them all over the US playing many of the top golf courses. He was admitted to the Mayflower Health Center on September 15, 2014 due to declining health. Maynard is survived by his son, Craig Long of Venice, CA; his daughter, Diana Long of Grinnell; his sisters, Bev Anderson of Grinnell, and Sharon Oliver of Grinnell; and his brother, Roger Long of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents.
