Mary was born on June 8, 1913, on her family farm south of Grinnell, the daughter of Emery and Anna Flanagan Schmitz. She attended rural school near her home and was later a 1932 graduate of Grinnell High School. Following her graduation she was employed at the Blue Bird Restaurant in Grinnell.

On February 4, 1937, she was united in marriage with Pierce Eugene Comerford, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Grinnell. A union of 69 years! The couple farmed in the Grinnell area for 36 years and moved to Grinnell in 1973. Mary enjoyed her life on her farm; she was active in many of the daily activities, including raising chickens, gardening and canning her produce. She was a proud farmwife and mother! She had been a resident of St. Francis Manor since 2009.

Mary was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and with the Altar and Rosary Society. Her faith and reciting thousands of rosaries were very important to her. She was also active with Meals on Wheels.

Mary was part of a close-knit family and her family was extremely important to her; she was a Godmother to many. Her home was always open to family and friends! She enjoyed playing cards and later in life traveling throughout the United States and abroad to Ireland and England.

Survivors include one son and his wife, Tom and Mary Comerford of Pompano Beach, Florida; three grandchildren, Chris Comerford and his wife, Kellie of Pompano Beach, Nancy Pado and her husband, Mike of Orlando, Florida and Sam Comerford and his wife, Yornet of Miami Shores, Florida; three great-grandchildren, Leanne Marie Pado, Aiden Pierce Comerford and Madison Marie Comerford; and one sister-in-law, Eileen Schmitz of Des Moines.
