Obituary

Marilyn June Hammen, 81, of Grinnell, Iowa, passed away on June 3, 2017 at Saint Francis Manor in Grinnell. Marilyn was born in Manson, Iowa on May 27, 1936, the daughter of the late Carvel and Evelyn (Johnson) Ferrand. She was the eldest of four siblings and grew up on the family farm near Pomeroy, Iowa. In 1954, she graduated as salutatorian of her class from Pomeroy High School. On September 4, 1954, Marilyn was united in marriage to the late William (Bill) L. Hammen of Jolley, Iowa, in Pomeroy, Iowa. They started their married life in Peoria, Illinois where Bill attended Watchmaker's School, and then they lived in several small Iowa towns over the next few years. In 1960, the growing family settled in Carroll, Iowa where they ran a jewelry store for twenty-five years. During this time, both were very active in church, school, and community activities. Many cherished lifelong friendships and bonds were formed during those years. Marilyn was a dedicated and loving mother to eleven children and was supportive and involved in all their activities. She was a Girl Scout leader, chief family organizer, and even detassled corn with her crew in the summer. In 1986, Bill and Marilyn moved to Chandler, Arizona where both became realtors. Many happy years were spent there raising the younger children and meeting new friends. She moved back to Iowa in 2014. Marilyn is survived by her children and spouses – Bill and Jeanne Hammen (IA), Terry and Teofy Hammen (CO), Vicki and Bruce Vopava (IA), Sherry Hammen (AZ), Mark and Leslie Hammen (AZ), Julie and Troy Teague (IA), Todd Hammen (IA), Amy and Bert Smith (AZ), Gregg and Shelley Hammen (CO), Melissa and Roger Zula (IA), and Scott and Katrina Hammen (IA). Also surviving is her sister Carolyn Hammen (IA), forty-six grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and many extended family members and friends.
