Marilyn Brooke, 90, of Grinnell, died on Tuesday, October 14, 2014, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 20, 2014, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. Shane Estes officiating. Music will be provided by Rev. Keith Morrison. Casket Bearers will be Mark Dimit, Nicholas Doud, Ron Edgington, Brian Haskell, Tim Kibbee and Chris Sheets. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Should friends desire, memorials may be directed to either the American Cancer Society, Grinnell Regional Hospice or to the Iowa Transportation Museum. Marilyn was born on January 9, 1924, at Moulton, Iowa to Ross and Eva Mudd Starks. She was raised at Moulton and graduated from Udell High School with the Class of 1941. On January 10, 1942, she was united in marriage to Vern R. Brooke in Lancaster, Missouri. The couple lived at Centerville and Kellogg before moving to the Grinnell area. They owned and operated a grain and livestock farm southeast of Grinnell. Marilyn was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Grinnell and was involved as a Sunday school pianist and the Baptist Ladies Guild. She was also a member of the Harmony Ladies Aid. She enjoyed church activities, sewing, quilting, crocheting, reading, word puzzles and camping at the Iowa State Farm and local state parks. Survivors include her husband, Vern Brooke of Grinnell; one son, Chuck (Sandi) Brooke of Grinnell; one daughter, Connie (Greg Flanagan) Doud of Des Moines; four grandchildren, Kelly (Mark) Cymanski, Kristy Brooke, Nicholas (Gina) Doud and Julie Doud; three great grandchildren, Sarah, Grace and Alexis Cymanski; and one sister, Leona Curry of Oskaloosa, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son-in-law, John Doud.
