Obituary

Kathy J. Amo, age 62 of Urbandale and formerly of Grinnell, died on Friday, July 6, 2018 at her home. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 18th at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell with Pastor Kathy Roys, pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell, officiating. A visitation will be held prior to her service from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. A reception will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be designated to PALS (Poweshiek Animal League Shelter), Tiger Packs (a program to provide food to Grinnell schoolchildren in need), or to St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with Kathy's family at www.smithfh.com. Kathy Jean Amo was born on July 18, 1955 in Grinnell, Iowa to Marvin and Margaret (Schroeder) Amo. She was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1973. She attended Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa and received a Medical Records degree and later attended Des Moines Area Community College in Des Moines and received her dental assistant degree. Kathy moved to Des Moines and was employed at the State of Iowa Department of Human Services, several Des Moines dental offices, and most recently was employed at Durham Bus Service in Waukee. She was a member of the New Hope Assembly of God Church in Des Moines. Kathy was a talented musician and played the flute in the Urbandale City Adult Band. Her enjoyments were going to the library to read and stay current on Facebook, taking care of animals, and sending out birthday cards to her family and friends. Kathy is survived by her two brothers, David (Dena) Amo of Brooklyn, Iowa and Mark (Sara Gaylor) Amo of St. Louis, Missouri; and nephew and niece, Alex and Elise Amo of St. Louis. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother in infancy.
