Obituary for James Elvin Dimit

James E. Dimit, 85, of Grinnell died on December 17, 2018, at the Mayflower Community Health Care Center in Grinnell.

No services are planned.

Memorial contributions may be designated to the Drake Community Library in Grinnell.

Jim was born on December 25, 1932, on the Gregson farm south of Grinnell, the son of Harold L. and Helen Gregson Dimit. He was raised in the Grinnell area and graduated from Grinnell High School. He received a BA degree from Grinnell College and later began graduate work at Washington State University and the University of Minnesota prior to receiving a MA degree at Drake University.

Jim was a biology professor at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri for 36 years. He retired in 1993. He returned to Grinnell to make his home and for many years he enjoyed helping his brother, Bob and nephew, Mark with their farm operation. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was an avid reader.

He is survived by his daughter, Dana (Kenneth) Mosher of Albuquerque, New Mexico; his granddaughter, Leala Mosher of Albuquerque; one brother, Robert (Sue) Dimit of Grinnell; one sister-in-law, Sharon Dimit of Ottumwa; four nephews, Mark (Janet) Dimit of Grinnell, Greg (Chris) Dimit of Chicago, David (Winonah) McCluskey of Des Moines and Paul (Cathy) Dimit of Bondurant; and several great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Bill Dimit.
