Frederick P. Krumm, 89, of Cheyenne, Wyoming passed away suddenly on Monday, Jan. 22, 2018. A memorial service for Frederick and Sonja Krumm will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 18th at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Pastor Matt Olson, pastor of the Newburg Chester Church, officiating. Interment will be at Westfield Cemetery. A reception will follow at the West Side Family Restaurant in Grinnell. Fred was born Nov. 25, 1928, in Grinnell, Iowa, and left to join the U.S. Army after high school. While stationed in Germany he was part of the Berlin Airlift, but more importantly, while traveling to Denmark, he met Sonja, where a life-time love affair began. They married and Fred convinced Sonja to join him back on the farm in Iowa. Not quite the life for Sonja, Fred took some other jobs in the U.S., but eventually, he became a surveyor with the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in England where his son, Jim, was born; went back to Iowa where his son, Mark, was born; then back to Germany where his daughter, Janet, was born. Eventually Fred was stationed in Orlando, Fla., and then F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, where part of his duties included teaching surveying. After retiring from the U.S. Air Force, he worked as a surveyor for the Wyoming state highway department, which he loved, allowing him to walk and explore more areas of Wyoming than most people have ever seen. Upon his retirement, he was able to become a snowbird, living half the year in Florida. Fred loved fishing, gardening and taking care of all the plants and trees on his properties; the great outdoors and fixing everything that was broken. His ethics were unmatched; always honest, hard-working and completely admired by his children and grandchildren for the example that he set. His life-long devotion to his wife, Sonja, was unmeasurable, as he took care of her until the day of his death. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 66 years, Sonja E. Krumm; son, Mark; daughter, Janet Hays (Tracy); grandsons, Nick, Ben and Daniel; and his sister, Jean Nolin. Fred was preceded in death by his son, Jim; his grandson, Chris; and his parents, Lila and Philip Krumm.
