Obituary

Clara Ryan, 88, of Grinnell, died on Sunday, July 29, 2012, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 4, 2012, at the Grinnell Christian Church with Rev. John Epperson officiating. Music will be provided by Jolene Jones, organist and Bob Toney, Marlene Toney, Merle Doty and Kristie Dana. Casket Bearers will be T.J. Ryan, Ashley Ryan, Scott Slagle, Clint Morris, Kim Morris, Kate Goodall, Kristen Cotton and Robert Wiedermann. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell beginning 12 noon on Friday and the family will be present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday. Should friends desire memorials may be directed to the Grinnell Christian Church or to Grinnell Regional Hospice. Clara was born on Wednesday, April 30, 1924 in Grinnell, Iowa, to Knudt and Olga Figland Larsen. She was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School with the Class of 1942. Following her high school graduation, she received a teaching certificate and taught in a rural school locally. On May 24, 1944, she was united in marriage to Warren Edgar Ryan in Grinnell. The couple operated a grain and livestock farm near Grinnell and Malcom. Following their retirement they moved to Grinnell and wintered in Arizona. Clara had a strong commitment to her family, friends, her church and to God. She reveled in gardening and her floral arrangements were Iowa State Fair award winners. She also loved family gatherings and was active in various functions in her community and her church. She enjoyed playing cards and traveling and life with her late husband. She continued to love and socialize with her family and friends from her hospice room until a week before her death. Survivors include her children, Marilyn Kay (Joseph) Krause of Sedona, AZ, Judith Ann Ryan {Wiedermann} of Pasadena, CA. and James Warren (Pam) Ryan of Phoenix, AZ; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Louise Doty and Gladys Larsen, both of Grinnell; and three brothers, Raymond (Shirley) Larsen and Delmar (Evelyn) Larsen, both of Grinnell and Roger Larsen of Littleton, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother, Kenneth Larsen; and one brother-in-law, Melvin Doty.
