Christiaan (Chris) Septer, was born July 3, 1912, in Veenandaal, Holland to William and Jannetje Beyer Septer. He immigrated to the United States in May of 1920 with his parents and five brothers and sisters. His family eventually settled in the Sully area and he was educated in rural schools near his home. Chris worked as a farm laborer before he married Augusta (Gussie) Maria Diehm on December 25, 1936, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell. The couple lived on farms at Spring Valley in Mahaska County for three years prior to moving to a farm west of Taintor, renting from Luke Vander Linden. They later farmed southwest of Ewart, renting from Equitable of New York. Then in the spring of 1943, the couple moved to their farm northeast of Searsboro. Chris was a true farmer at heart. He loved his life on the farm and the hard work associated with running a successful farm operation. He and Gussie raised Hy Line Chickens and sold eggs to Rudkin Hatchery in Grinnell. He also enjoyed his small flock of sheep and going to farm sales, where he enjoyed visiting with his friends. For years he traveled all over the county with his corn sheller. Which was his pride and joy! Survivors include two brothers, Gerrit (Shorty) Septer of Montezuma and Arnold Septer and his wife, Jean of Grinnell; one sister-in-law, Isabel Septer of Montezuma; two brothers-in-law, Richard Heemsbergen and Marvin Dieleman, both of Grinnell; and a host of nieces and nephews. Chris died on July 28, 2005, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell, at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gussie in 1987; two brothers, William and Richard Septer; and five sisters, Tena Uitermarkt, Christina Baltisberger, Margaret Walker, Reka Heemsbergen, and Minnie Dieleman.
