Carroll William Smith was born on February 7,1933 in rural Poweshiek County, Iowa, the son of William Abel and Dorothy Elizabeth (Miller) Smith. He was raised in the Brooklyn, Iowa area and attended country school at Bear Creek #3 through the sixth grade. He graduated from Brooklyn High School with the class of 1951. Following his education, he began working for Poweshiek County.

On May 16,1953, Carroll was united in marriage to Patricia Ann King in the Catholic chapel at Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming. While serving in the Air Force, he was stationed in Oakland, California; Cheyenne, Wyoming; Bossier City, Louisiana; St. John, Newfoundland; and Denison, Texas. After being honorably discharged in 1957, he worked for Poweshiek County and started farming north of Malcom. They rented farms north of Brooklyn and west of Brooklyn and in 1963, they purchased a home southwest of Malcom. They had a dairy herd of Holsteins and a milking operation for several years. They also raised swine and had a grain farming operation. After retiring from farming, Carroll returned to work for Poweshiek County as sanitarian and zoning administrator.

Carroll held a strong love for his family, especially his grandchildren. He always looked forward to attending their school and sporting events. He was a hard-worker who loved life on the farm. He spent countless hours in his shop fixing most anything with his welding talents. Carroll achieved a few things on his “bucket list.” He was a pilot and thoroughly enjoyed the time he spent in the air. He and Pat also enjoyed taking weekend rides with friends on their motorcycle. After retirement, they enjoyed spending winter months at Pharr South Park in Pharr, Texas, where they made many new acquaintances each year and enjoyed spending time and doing activities with longtime friends. He always enjoyed the Iowa State Fair and Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball games. Carroll was a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Grinnell, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, American Legion, and the Knights of Columbus.

Carroll is survived by his wife of 65 years, Pat Smith of Grinnell; six children, Michael (Sandy) Smith of Marengo, Iowa, Kenneth (Lesa) Smith of Montezuma, Iowa, Edward (Brenda) Smith of Urbandale, Iowa, Cheryl (Allen) Bowling of Lentner, Missouri, David (Pam) Smith of Marion, Iowa, and Chris (Erin) Smith of West Des Moines, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; sister, Linda (Bud) Norman of Deep River, Iowa; sister-in-law, Phyllis Smith of Grinnell; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Erma DePauw; brothers, Warren Smith and Clint Smith; and grandson, Brandon Smith.
