Alice E. Smith, 75, of Montezuma and formerly of Grinnell, passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2017, at the Montezuma Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 13, 2018, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. John Epperson, officiating. The family will be present at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Alice was born on April 1, 1942, in Oskaloosa, Iowa to Carl and Cora Plate Roof. She was raised in Deep River, Barnes City and Searsboro before moving to Grinnell. She received her education in Grinnell.
On August 9, 1958, she was united in marriage to LeRoy Smith in Grinnell. The couple made their home in Grinnell and she was a mother of two daughters and maintained the family home. She also worked as a seamstress for the DeLong's Sportswear Company and the Rock Creek Athletic Company.
Alice was a member of the Grinnell Christian Church and the Eagles Lodge. She enjoyed crocheting, camping, fishing, bowling and motorcycle trips to Sturgis, South Dakota with her husband and grandson, Todd.
Survivors include her two daughters, Nancy Van Wyk and Diane McIlrath, both of Grinnell; four grandchildren, Todd Fortner of Grimes, IA, Kara Emmert of Creston, Mandy Emmert and Tait Emmert, both of Malcom; two great grandsons, Gage and Chase Fortner, both of Grimes; two brothers, Bill (Ann) Roof of Avoca, Iowa and Keith (Jodee) Roof of North Liberty, Iowa; and one sister-in-law, Betty Roof of Grinnell.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one son-in-law, Dennis McIlrath; one brother, Don Roof; one sister, Eleanor Merrill; and two nephews, Joe Roof and Jeffrey Merrill.
