Obituary for Ruth Greenwald

Ruth Greenwald, age 90, died on Sunday, April 22, 2018, at her residence in Beebe Hall of the Mayflower Community in Grinnell.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 5, 2018, in the Carman Center of the Mayflower Community, 600 Park Street in Grinnell. A reception will follow the service.

Dorothy Ruth Greenwald was born on July 6, 1927, in New Hampton, Iowa, the daughter of William Geyer Greenwald and Lois (Raffety) Greenwald. Ruth attended Chester Township schools, grades 1-6, and Grinnell Public Schools, grades 7-12. She graduated from Grinnell High School in 1944 and from Grinnell College with a BA degree in 1948. In 1952 she received her MS degree from the University of Iowa.

Ruth devoted her life to education and had taught high school mathematics for 44 years. She was an educator in the Newton Public Schools from 1948-1950, the University of Iowa Lab School while acquiring her MS from 1950-1952, Highland Park High School in Illinois from 1952-1965, Iowa City High School from 1965-1968, West High School in Iowa City from 1968-1992. Following her retirement, Ruth moved to Grinnell in 1999 and has resided at the Mayflower Community.

Ruth was a member of the First Baptist Church in Grinnell, Delta Kappa Gamma, several book clubs, Sit ‘n Knit, and was active on several committees at the Mayflower Community. She enjoyed traveling, and her fondest memories were walking the countryside in England with Stan and Gail in 1992 and later traveling to Nova Scotia in 1997 and Elderhostel England in 1998.

Ruth is survived by her brother, Stanley W. (Gail) Greenwald of Grinnell; and three generations of nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents in 1989 and by her brother, Raffety Greenwald, in the polio epidemic of 1940.
