Helen was born on October 5, 1934, in Poweshiek County, the daughter of Kenneth Fay and Anna LaChrista Villhauer Shockley. She was raised in the Grinnell area and was a 1952 graduate of Grinnell High School.

On March 6, 1954, she was united in marriage with Larry Wayne Cox, Sr., in Grinnell. The couple continued to make their home in Grinnell where they raised their seven children.

Helen was employed as a cashier at Super America, now Kum & Go, in Grinnell for 28 years. She retired in September of 1998. While employed there she got to know many, many customers and was able to create friendships through the years. She loved her work and the people she worked with.

Helen was a very loving and caring person. Her family was very important to her and she really enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s activities. She was a great cook and she was particularly known for her corn pancakes! She enjoyed gardening and canning her produce, collecting dolls, and watching western movies. Camping and attending Blue Grass Festivals were always fun for her. She enjoyed traveling and her travels usually took her to visit family members. A fond memory of hers was traveling to Germany to visit family there that she had never met. She was a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs!

Helen is survived by her husband, Larry, Sr. of Grinnell; seven children, Larry Cox, Jr. of Grinnell, Michael (Julie) Cox of Montezuma, Patrick Cox of Grinnell, Diane Engle of Altoona, Kimberly (Melvin) Puls of Malcom, Pamela Cox of Grinnell and Steven Cox of Grinnell; two brothers, Kenneth Shockley of Lenoir City, Tennessee and Thomas (Edie) Shockley of Lewiston, Illinois; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Carlene Krumm and Hazel Schultz; a daughter-in-law, Vickie Cox, and one granddaughter, Amy Cox.
