Obituary for Barbara J. Thomson

Barbara J. Thomson, age 93, of Grinnell died on Monday, April 2, 2018, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 7, 2018 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Pastor George Salnave, pastor of the First Presbyterian Evangelical Church in Montezuma, officiating. A reception will follow the service in the Buckley Dining Room at the Mayflower Community in Grinnell. Interment will be held at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday at the Smith Funeral Home and her family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening.

Memorials may be designated to the St. Francis Manor Foundation and may be mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared online with her family at www.smithfh.com.

Barbara Jean Carter was born on January 9, 1925 in Grinnell, Iowa to John and Esther (Rowe) Carter. She was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1942. Following her education, she worked at Sanders Variety Store and Broadway Clothing Store.

Barbara was united in marriage to B. Paul Thomson on January 20, 1946 at the First Baptist Church in Grinnell. They were blessed with two sons, Carter and Martin. The couple farmed five miles north of Malcom. Barbara was a homemaker for many years and enjoyed raising her children and staying busy on the farm. When her sons were in high school, she began working at Bang’s Apparel and later at Ross’ clothing store, where she was the manager. Paul and Barb moved to Seeland Park in Grinnell in 1993. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Grinnell.

Barbara held a strong love for her family and cherished the times her family was together. She was known by many for her vibrant, fun-loving personality and infectious smile that could brighten anyone’s day. She enjoyed life at Seeland Park, where she could socialize and take part in activities with her many friends.

Barbara is survived by her sons, Carter (Karen) Thomson of Montezuma, Iowa and Martin Thomson of Searsboro, Iowa; grandchildren, Angie (Jerry) Snyder of Fairfax, Iowa, Jon (Ashley) Thomson of Creston, Iowa, Ben Thomson of Searsboro, and Robbie (Cassie) Lewis of Lynnville, Iowa; great grandchildren, McKenna Nott, Morgan Nott, Amaya Snyder, Alonna Snyder, Chloe Thomson, and Cal Thomson; and her sister, Virginia Searles of Seattle, Washington.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; husband, B. Paul Thomson in 1999; and daughter-in-law, Melissa Thomson in 2015.
