Obituary for Andrew N. Dunnick

Andrew Dunnick, age 84 of Grinnell, died on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at Brooklyn Community Estates in Brooklyn, Iowa.

A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the Grinnell Friends Church with Rev. Steve Savage officiating. Interment with military honors will held at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday at the Smith Funeral Home and his family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Brooklyn Community Estates and may be mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared online with his family at www.smithfh.com.

Andrew Neldo Dunnick was born the son of Floris and Henrietta Dunnick on May 31, 1933 in Jasper County, Iowa near Lynnville. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Lynnville High School with the class of 1951.

On March 23, 1957, Andrew was united in marriage to Ruth Alene Pierce at the First Friends Church in Grinnell. The couple farmed near Kellogg and Newburg before moving to Grinnell in 1968. Andrew worked at C&K Transfer and Farm Service in Grinnell, Farmhand, Inc., then worked at Grinnell College in the Building and Grounds department. He retired from Grinnell College in 1998.

Andrew was an outdoorsman who wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. He was a hard-worker and enjoyed helping others. His enjoyments included camping, collecting antiques, attending auctions and bluegrass festivals, traveling to the Black Hills and the Ozarks, and listening to bluegrass music.

Survivors include his daughter, Marcia Brewer of Searsboro, Iowa; two sons, Mark (Debra) Dunnick of Waverly, Iowa and Marlin Dunnick of Marion, Iowa; 6 grandchildren, Jessica (Eric) Webb of Waverly, Katie (Nathan) Muhs of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, Joshua Dunnick of Hiawatha and Amanda Dunnick of Marshalltown; Michael and Misty Brewer, both of Searsboro; 5 great grandchildren, Kellen, Bennett and Lincoln Webb and Madelyn and Connor Muhs; and his siblings, Arma Eaton of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Florence (Leroy) Sterk of Grinnell, and Alma (Melvin) Freese of Haverhill, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Ruth Dunnick in 2017.
