Dr. Kevin W. Sterk, 40, of Pella, and formerly of Grinnell, died July 9, 2010, at Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 17, at the Grinnell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Raymond Lott, retired, officiating. Organist will be Bill Tinker. Pallbearers will be Steve and Tim Armstrong, Rick Bryan, Joe Hutchinson, Harold Schlatter, and Bill Welsh. Honorary bearers will be Allen Latcham and Ken Sterk. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 Friday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Dr. Kevin W. Sterk Memorial Fund.

Kevin was born July 28, 1969, in Grinnell, the son of Glenn Allen and Ginger Lynn Armstrong Sterk. He was raised in Grinnell and was a 1987 graduate of Grinnell High School. In 1991, he received his B.A. degree in Religious Studies from Grinnell College.

He was employed at Principle Financial in Des Moines for several years and then later attended the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Des Moines University graduating in 2000. He served his residency for one year at Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines and then for three years at the Wichita, Kansas Psychiatric Hospital. He did one additional year of forensic psychiatry training in Cincinnati, Ohio. Following his education, he was employed as a psychiatrist in the Ohio State Prison System. He moved to Pella in 2007 and was the medical director in the geriatric psychiatric unit at the Mahaska County Hospital in Oskaloosa where his focus was in forensic and neuro psychiatry.

Kevin loved to travel and had traveled extensively throughout the United States. He was an avid Chicago White Sox Fan and a voracious reader. He loved his dogs, antique shopping, and enjoyed trying to learn something new every day. He was compassionate towards others and was always respectful of his staff and peers.

Survivors include his parents Glenn and Ginger Sterk of Grinnell and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his infant twin brother and his grandparents, Melvin and Viola Armstrong and Cornie and Minnie Sterk.
