Wavern Duane McDowell was born the son of William Orville McDowell and Eva Stanley on March 17, 1937 in Montezuma, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Searsboro, Iowa.

Following his education, he drove a supply truck for Funk Produce of Grinnell and he also worked for Malcom Lumber in Malcom. He was united in marriage to Virginia Irwin in 1953 and they lived in Malcom. He served as the Malcom Fire Chief during the 1960’s. Their marriage later ended in divorce. In 1973, he was married to Jeanette Elaine Huntley in Omaha, Nebraska. They moved to Gilman in 1975 and he was a manager at Central Cooperative in Gilman. He served on the Gilman City Council and was a volunteer fireman with the Gilman Fire Department for several years. His enjoyments included golfing and maintaining a beautiful yard.

Wavern is survived by his sons, Roger McDowell of Ely, Iowa and Rod (Dee) McDowell of Phoenix, Arizona; three step-children, Tom (Mary) Hoien of Columbia, Missouri, Tim Hoien of Brooklyn, Iowa, and Teresa (Tracey Rothenberger) of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren, Amy (Chad) Larson of Brooklyn, Todd (Barb) Hoien and Matt Hoien all of Columbia, Missouri, T.J. Hoien of Reinbeck, Jessie and Cody Hoien of Brooklyn, and Keely McDowell of Arizona; and three great-grandchildren, Dylan and Jackson Eichhorn of Brooklyn and Jack Hoien of Columbia, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jeanette on March 17, 2009; and his siblings, Warren McDowell, Lyman “Barney” McDowell, and Ruth Courtney.
