Barbara was born on July 9, 1949, in Centerville, Iowa to Martin and Lillian Garr Halterman. She was raised in Newton and attended Newton public schools.
On August 14, 1965, she was married to Larry Lemke in Lancaster, Missouri. The couple lived in Newton and Grinnell, where she worked in various jobs.

She enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, traveling and racing cars. Her children and grandchildren were the joy of her life. She welcomed many people into her home and she never considered any of them strangers.

Survivors include her husband, Larry Lemke of Grinnell; two sons, Bryan Lemke of Grinnell and Quinton Lemke of Rock Creek Lake; one daughter, Teresa Yepez of Grinnell; eight grandchildren; one great grandson; two brothers, Leonard Halterman of Newton and Wilbur “Lucky” Halterman of Marshalltown; two sisters, Donna Morton and Wilma “Willie” Lafond, both of Newton; as well as countless adopted and unverifiable children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Marilyn Halterman; and her granddaughter.
