William Luther Airey was born on August 3, 1933, in Grinnell, Iowa to Mervin and Lila Heishman Airey. In 1936, the family moved to the Marshalltown area. He graduated from Liscomb High School with the class of 1952. In January of 1952, Billy enlisted with the Iowa National Guard. He honorably served with the Company D (Red Bull Division) until his discharge in 1958. |
On December 8, 1962, he married Ruth A. McDonald in Marshalltown, Iowa. Billy farmed until 1971, when he started driving a livestock truck for Buck Hummer Trucking of Oxford, Iowa. In 1991, he drove for Don Hummer Trucking of Homestead and retired from trucking in 1995. He started to work at Zueber’s Restaurant in Homestead and then Brick Haus Restaurant in Amana for several years as a cook and dishwasher.

He was a member of the United Methodist Men’s Group and organized their annual toy show. He enjoyed farming, driving truck and collecting toy tractors. He especially liked the Oliver tractors. Before spending almost a week at the Mercy Hospital Hospice Unit, Billy was a resident of Parkview Manor in Wellman for the past two years.

Billy is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ruth Airey of Oxford, Iowa; four daughters, Sharon (Duane) McBroom of Oxford, Linda Airey of Grinnell, Judy (John) Schwab of Oxford and Evelyn Yanuasch of Tiffin; two sons, Lynn Airey of Iowa City and Mervin Airey of Oxford; four grandchildren, Kimberly Airey, Devin Airey, Keaton Yanausch and Tanner Airey; and one brother, Lyle Airey of Albion.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Floyd Airey.
