Dorothy Downey, 91, of Grinnell, died June 10, 2010, at the Mayflower Community Health Care Center.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 14, at the Trinity Lutheran Church near Grinnell with Trish Decker, interim pastor, officiating. Organist will be Teresa Ziegenmeyer, guitarist/soloist Mike Gross, and Shane Gross soloist. Pallbearers will be Jeff Downey, Gary Downey II, Tracy Stevens, Brian Wilson, Tammy Keigan, and Michael Ederer. Honorary bearers will be Samuel and Christopher Downey, Scott Jack, Kimberlea Harvey, Tricia Kincaid, Lisa Rathman, Timothy, Laura, Teresa and Jason Ederer, Willis Gross, Faye Loftin, Dean Downey, Shirley Hanssen, Paul and Juanita Ahrens, and Bob and Doris VanderLeest. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Smith Funeral Home and where the family will be present from 3:00 to 5:00 Sunday afternoon.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church Altar Guild.

Dorothy was born February 1, 1919, in Malcom, Iowa, the daughter of Harlan and Evalyn Puls Gross. She was raised in the Malcom area and was a 1937 graduate of Malcom High School. |
On June 12, 1940, she was united in marriage to Keith L. Downey, at the Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in Poweshiek County for many years and later moved to Grinnell in 1983.

She was a life-long member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Trinity Lutheran Altar Guild, and the Trinity Lutheran Women’s Circle. She enjoyed traveling, fishing, gardening and flower arranging, and bird watching. She loved sharing her time with her family, attending church activities, playing cards, and going on walks. |
Survivors include six children, Charles (Jeana) Downey of Bettendorf, Gary (Rebecca) Downey of Grinnell, Vicki (Keith) Jack of Montezuma, Becky (Denny) Wilson of Kellogg, Mary (Reg) Wells of Grinnell, and Patsy (Fred) Ederer of Prairie Du Sac, Wisconsin; one sister, Faye Loftin of Grinnell; one brother, Willis Gross of Placentia, California; 18 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1984; and two brothers, Kenneth and Clair Gross. |
