Bessie was born on December 8, 1934, in Montezuma, Iowa to Russell and Winifred Rivers Schmidt. She attended schools in Searsboro and Lynnville before graduating from Montezuma High School.

On March 7, 1953, she was married to Roger D. Bailey in Grinnell. The couple lived in Grinnell and she worked as a sales clerk at Jerry’s ByLo Grocery Store and Walmart.
|
Survivors include her daughter, Cindy (Kelly) Asay of Eugene, Oregon; three sons, Roger Wayne Bailey, Loren Bailey and Eric (Mary Jo)Bailey, all of Grinnell; 13 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and two brothers, Harold Schmidt of Grinnell and Russell Schmidt Jr. of Coggan, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and one brother, Henry Schmidt.
