William A. “Bill” Gilliland, 63, of Grinnell died April 3, 2010, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A graveside service and burial with military rites has been scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 8, at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell with the Rev. Susan Sanning, Grinnell Regional Hospice Chaplain, officiating. Honorary bearers will be Rick and Don Gilliland. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Bill was born on October 15, 1946, in Grinnell, the son of Hugh R. and Mary E. Stull Gilliland. He was raised in Grinnell and was a 1964 graduate of Grinnell High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

Following his military service he returned to Grinnell and was employed at several places including, Miracle Recreation, Grinnell College, and Rabbits Tavern. Later in life he was employed at various other jobs.

Bill was a member of the Grinnell American Legion and Grace Community Church where he was baptized on February 4, 2001.

He loved nature and feeding squirrels and enjoyed gardening. He was very good with plants. He was a sensitive and loving person and didn’t know a stranger.

Survivors include one sister. Rose (Carl) Shockey of Newton; one brother, John (Karol) Gilliland of Marshalltown; three sisters-in-law, Barbara Gilliland of Searsboro, Elaine Gilliland of Grinnell, and Bonnie Otto of Des Moines; and three special friends, Phyllis Van Es of Grinnell and Ken and Shirley Conner of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Robert, Hugh “Bud”, and Charles Gilliland; and one sister, Alice Johnson.
