Carroll was born on May 26, 1922 in Kellogg, Iowa to Ona and Bessie Adams Stuart. He graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1942. He served stateside for the United States Air Force during World War II as an airplane mechanic.
|
On July 21, 1946, Carroll was united in marriage to Carolyn Rutherford at her parent’s home in Grinnell. They made their home in rural Grinnell and began raising their family of two sons and two daughters. Carroll farmed for a time and later worked as a mechanic for International Harvester. Later, he worked in the maintenance departments of Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company, Grinnell College, and GTE. He retired from GTE in 1988.

Carroll’s family and friends were very important to him. He was an active member of the Grinnell Elks and he attended the Grinnell United Methodist Church. He spent many enjoyable hours fishing, bird watching, and following the University of Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball teams. Carroll and Carolyn enjoyed traveling, especially to visit family and friends in Texas, Colorado and Florida. His greatest joy, though, was attending the athletic events and dance competitions of his four grandchildren.

Carroll is survived by his two children, Douglas (Beth) Stuart of Plainfield, Iowa, and Ellen (Delmar) Lender of Grinnell, Iowa; one brother, Keith (Jean) Stuart of Newton, Iowa, four grandchildren, David (Melinda) Stuart of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Adam Stuart of Winfield, Iowa, Kayla Lender of Mankato, Minnesota, and Grant Lender of Grinnell; and two great-great grandchildren, Lily and Charles Stuart of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Carroll was preceded in death by his parents, Ona and Bessie Stuart in 1981 and 1994; his wife Carolyn in 2007; his son, Daniel in 1968; and his daughter, Sandra in 1979.
