Mary was born on March 8, 1916, in Johnstown, PA to Anthony and Mary Widmann Krueger. She attended Johnstown schools and graduated from the University of St. Francis in Joliet, IL. She also did graduate work in social work at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Iowa. During World War II she served as a hospital field director for the American Red Cross at various army posts.

On January 22, 1948, she was married to John C. Neely in the chapel at Fort Clayton in the Panama Canal Zone. The couple lived in Erie, PA and Westfield, NJ before moving to Grinnell, IA in 1971. Mary served as Director of Social Services of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown and later for Grinnell General Hospital.

Mary was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grinnell, the Marian Study Club and St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a member of the University of St. Francis Alumni Association and the Care Review Committee of St. Francis Manor. She served on the Board of Directors of Poweshiek County Public Health, the Grinnell Regional Hospice, the Iowa Hospice Organization, the Iowa Chapter of Social Workers and the American Cancer Society, Poweshiek County Unit.

Survivors include her children, Mary Ann Neely of Des Moines, Christine (Ronald) Page of Troy, Michigan, John (Bernadette) Neely of Brandon, Florida, Kathleen (Paul) Brown of Urbandale and Ellen (Christopher) Lincoln of Des Moines; six grandchildren; and two sisters, Madeleine and Eleanor Krueger, both of Johnstown, PA. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one brother, George Krueger.

Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Parish Foundation, Grinnell Regional Medical Center or to the University of St. Francis of Joliet, IL and sent in care of Christine Page, 2024 Highbury Drive, Troy, Michigan 48085.
