Elaine was born on July 9, 1917, at Shenandoah, Iowa to Oscar and Helen Parson Wallin. She was raised at Farragut and graduated from Farragut High School in 1933.

On July 24, 1935, she was married to Ralph E. Hamman in Stanton, Iowa. The couple moved to Grinnell in 1947 and Ralph managed the Spurgeon’s Store. Elaine worked from 1960 to 1978, as a bookkeeper and teller at the former Poweshiek County National Bank. The family also owned and operated Hamman’s Apparel on Main Street in Grinnell from 1960 to 1989.

Elaine was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and she was active in the women’s circle of the church. She was also a member of the Soroptimist Club and the Grinnell Chamber of Commerce. She enjoyed playing the organ, cooking, entertaining and playing cards.

Survivors include two daughters, Lois Hieber of Solon, Iowa and Phyllis McDaniel of Punta Gorda, Florida; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and one brother, Donovan L. Wallin of Sugarland, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers, Orville and Robert Wallin; and one sister, Eleanore Salfrank; and her son-in-law, Stuart McDaniel.

Memorials may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church or to Muscular Dystrophy.
