Shirley C. Weaver, 80, of Grinnell died December 11, 2009, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 18, 2009, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. John Epperson, retired, officiating. Organist will be Susie Edelen. Pallbearers will be Bart Anderson, Tom and Bill Kaldenberg, Rod and Jim Davison, Don Fleener, Michael Weaver, and Nicholas Ludwig. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home and where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Shirley Weaver Memorial Fund. Shirley was born on March 7, 1929, in Newton, Iowa, the daughter of Matthew Theodore and Elsie Catherene Buckley Kaldenberg. She was raised in Newton and was a graduate of Newton High School. On February 21, 1948, she was united in marriage to LaVern Elmer Weaver, in Iowa City. The couple farmed near Newburg for many years. She was employed as a secretary in the Grinnell – Newburg School District for 28 years, retiring in 1992. Shirley was very family oriented. She loved and cared for her family dearly. She was a strong role-model and never missed a family member’s sporting event. She stressed the importance and value of an education and being of strong character. She never cut corners and always did the right thing. She loved her life on the farm where she was kind-hearted and protective of animals. She loved to cook, particularly Sunday dinners and gardening. Shirley loved her network of friends and appreciated all their love and kindness. Survivors include three children, Kathryn (Scott) Ludwig of Greensboro, Georgia, David (Nancy) Weaver of Grinnell, and Brian (Annie) Weaver of Winterset; one brother, John Kaldenberg of Oakland Acres; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, LaVern in 2000; two brothers; and two sisters.
