Florence was born on February 29, 1908, at the family home near Indianola to James and Elizabeth Hall Cutler. As a child, she lived in South Dakota and returned to Madison County where her family farmed. Florence attended a variety of schools and later graduated from Ottumwa Heights High School in Ottumwa with the Class of 1925. She was also a graduate of Mercy Hospital’s School of Nursing.
On May 12, 1929 she was married to John Hotchkin in Grinnell and to this union was born two sons, John and Michael. The couple lived in Grinnell and she worked as a nurse at the former St. Francis Hospital for several years.
Florence was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grinnell and she was active in the Altar and Rosary Society and other functions of the church. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting, playing cards and Scrabble, and fishing trips with her family.
She is survived by her son, Michael (Doris) Hotchkin of Grinnell; four grandchildren, Dan (Leslie) Hotchkin of Palatine, IL, Kathy (Ken) Groenbeck of Davenport, IA, Patti (Scott) Splavec of West Des Moines, IA and Tim Hotchkin of St. Paul, MN; seven great grandchildren, Erin, Jonathon and Jessica Hotchkin, Mitchell and Kaitlyn Groenbeck, Chelsey Stanley and Michael Splavec; one great great granddaughter, Audrey Henning; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Hotchkin; one son, John Rodney Hotchkin; three brothers, Edward, James and Joseph Cutler; and two sisters, Mary Irwin and Margaret Holland.
