Edward John Huyser was born on October 6, 1922, on the family farm near Sully, Iowa to Gerrit and Anna Marie DeJong Huyser. He was raised on the family farm and attended rural school. In February of 1943, he entered the United States Army and saw action in the Normandy invasion, the Battle of the Bulge, the Ardennes Forest and the Rhine River crossing. Following the war he returned to Sully and worked for the Sully Co-op.
He was married to Ila Mae Baarda on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1946 at her parent’s home near Grinnell and were the parents of Gordon and Sheryl. They farmed near Sully and later moved to the Baarda family farm southwest of Grinnell. Ed enjoyed different occupations such as farming for 13 years and owning and operating the Grinnell Truckline. He also was a truck driver for Farm Service, C & K Transfer and North American Van Lines. Prior to his retirement he worked as a grounds foreman at Grinnell College. Throughout his retirement he volunteered his time at church camps, Meals-On-Wheels and was a part-time park ranger at Diamond Lake
Ed was an active member of the Grace Community Church. He will be remembered as a faithful husband, a caring father and good neighbor and friend. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed being outdoors.
Survivors include his wife, Ila Mae Huyser of Grinnell; his children, Gordon (Nanci) Huyser of Kilgore, Texas and Sheryl (Ray) Sherman of Camas, Washington; two grandsons, Curtis (Debra) Sherman and Michael Sherman; four brothers, Vernon (Lucille) Huyser of Lynnville, Howard Huyser of Pella, Myron (Nancy) Huyser of Badger, Iowa, and Gary (Linda) Huyser of Hatton, Missouri; and one sister, Lynda (Larry) Renaud of Sully. He was preceded in death by his parents.
