Walter Franz Kinne was born the son of Franz F. Kinne and Mathilda Nahnsen Kinne on February 23, 1918 in Gowrie, Iowa. He was raised on the family farm near Gowrie and attended rural schools near his home.

He assisted his father on the family farm and began farming on his own by the age of 20. He was united in marriage to Marie Nolte on August 21, 1940 in Melcher, Iowa. To this union were born their sons, Harold and Darwin. He continued to farm in Webster County, Iowa until he retired from farming at the age of 59. The couple then moved to Jefferson, Iowa and Fort Dodge, Iowa, respectively. Walter began selling farm soon thereafter and continued until 1992. The couple moved to the Mayflower Community in Grinnell in 1992.

Walter was a simple, hard-working, family man. His enjoyments included tending to his flower garden, traveling, reading and solving word puzzles.

Walter is survived by his sons, Harold (Connie) Kinne of Unionville, Missouri and Darwin (Suzanne) Kinne of Grinnell, Iowa; 7 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; his brother, Lawrence (Deloris) Kinne of Novi, Michigan; and his sisters, Dorothy Sutherland of Des Moines, Iowa and Ruby Dencklau of Fort Dodge, Iowa. Walter died Friday, September 11, 2009, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell. He was 91 years of age and he was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marie Kinne; and his brothers, Verne and Clarence Kinne.
