Hazel was born on August 19, 1916, near Gilman, Iowa to Arthur and Helena Brimso Anderson. She was raised in Marshall and Tama Counties and attended rural school. In 1933, she was married to Glen Hatton and to this union were born two children, Larry and Marlene. The marriage ended in divorce and she was married to Raymond Nicholl on April 4, 1943 and to this union was born one daughter, Raelene. The couple operated a grain and livestock farm west of Gilman until 1969 when they retired and moved to their home in Gilman. Hazel enjoyed traveling to California every year for 30 years to visit her daughter and her sister. She also enjoyed traveling to Canada and Minnesota on fishing trips. Her hobbies included gardening, reading, oil painting, playing cards, cooking, ceramics and many other crafts. She made over 100 quilts and enjoyed mushroom hunting, supporting the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by one daughter, Raelene Schnathorst of Gilman; six grandchildren, Celeste Maeshiro of Montrose, CA, Bryan Vincent of Port Alsworth, AK, Judy (Paul) Nybeck of Edmond, OK, June (Todd) Eckhart of Reinbeck, IA, Stacy (Dana Moses) Schnathorst of Coralville, IA and John (Lisa Dittmer) Schnathorst of Urbandale, IA; nine great grandchildren; one great great grandson; one brother-in-law, Duane Muckler of Marshalltown; two sisters-in-law, Doris Anderson of Virginia and Frances Anderson of Laurel; and one daughter-in-law, LeeAnn Hatton of Reinbeck, IA. Hazel died on Thursday, September 3, 2009, at Villa Del Sol in Marshalltown. She was 93 years of age and she was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her children, Larry Hatton and Marlene Vincent; one granddaughter, Gina Hatton; three brothers, Harmon, Joel and Orville Anderson; and two sisters, Dorothy Doyle and Dolores Muckler.

Memorials may be directed to the Gilman American Legion Auxiliary or to the Gilman Community-United Church of Christ.
