Clara May Walker, 91, of Grinnell and formerly of Gilman, died July 28, 2009, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A graveside service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 8, at Dobson Cemetery, rural Tama County, near Garwin with Dr. Jeff Blackman, pastor of the Gilman Community United Church of Christ, officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Clara May Walker Memorial Fund. Clara was born June 11, 1918, in Tama County, the daughter of Arthur and Mable Orvis Petrie. She was raised in Tama County and attended rural school near her home. On March 12, 1937, she was united in marriage to Wendell Lewis Walker, in Princeton, Missouri. The couple lived in Gilman most of their lives where they owned and operated C & W Hardware. She later worked for a short-time at Taylor’s Maid-Rite in Marshalltown. She moved to Grinnell in 2006. Clara and Wendell raised six children: Mary (Dick) Bailey of Grinnell; Deana (Bill) Kacer of Cincinnati, Ohio; Dixie (Jim) Allgood of Ankeny (deceased); Peggy (Steve) Ronk of Gilman; Ted (Sandy) Walker of LeGrand; and Craig (Kate) Walker of Marshalltown. Clara is survived by one sister, Mable Brennick of Dunbar, 15 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren Clara was a homemaker most of her life. She was an avid fisherman, loved gardening, and canning the food she grew. She was well-known for her excellent baked goods, and cherished her gatherings with family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Dixie Allgood; one granddaughter; three sisters; and five brothers.
